Straighten Horizon or not?

November 10, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

And the winner is straight horizon…..
>>>
Here is a shot that I like except the horizon isn’t horizontal. But when you straighten it the top on the mountain seems awfully close to the top of the frame. Which do you prefer?

Jackson to Victor pano

November 10, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

I tried to do this pano before but Photoshop balked. Turns out Photoshop expects the files to be numbered from left to right, and for some reason I had taken the Pano right to left. To fix it, I went into Lightroom and renamed the files. Now I have my Pano…

Sedona Pano

November 8, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

When I loaded my Sedona gallery, the one Pano that I tried to upload failed. It was too large of a file. I’ve made a slightly smaller version, and have added it. Here is a copy of the Pano and the link to the gallery.

HDR vs. Single Tonemapped Image

November 7, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

I recently learned on ‘Stuck in Customs’ (Trey Ratcliff), that you can tone map a single image in Photomatix.  I’ve tried this on several images, and like the result.  It really came in handy for some shots I took in Grand Teton where I forgot my tripod.  But I did notice that in pictures with a large Dynamic Range the single image version is a little more blocked up then a 3 image file.  Makes sense.  I guess nothing is free.  See if you can tell which is the single image.

Watermark – Too much?

Added a watermark in Lightroom 3 (Beta). Loaded on all the photos in my new gallery. I can’t decide if it’s too obtrusive. What to you think? Gallery & sample:

It’s the Light – Devils Kitchen

October 31, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

Decided that the best photos from my recent trip to Sedona were at Devils Kitchen.  The reason is the light was spectacular.  The kind of light that makes you giddy as you work it. West Fork had the color and some of the pictures will be good.  But nothing beats great light.

Sedona I Want A Redo!!

October 20, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

I’m going back to Sedona on Thursday. This will be my 3rd trip in 3 years. Sedona is an amazing place with great hikes and beautiful things to photograph. Rather than looking for more places to photograph for the first time, I want to take another look at places I’ve been before and try to get a different angle on them. Here is my re-do list:

– Better time of day? Get up early!

– Better weather?

– Try IR photo’s

– HDR for sure.

– Do pano’s, especially when doing big expansive views.

– Work different angles, more close ups

– Add people to a few shots to demonstrate scale

– There is a good chance that the Cottonwoods will be in bloom. Add more color…

Can you suggest others?

Narrow your scope doing Photo evaluation

October 15, 2009 by admin 1 Comment

It takes me a long time to go through the process of selecting the best photos from a shoot. I do some evaluation in Lightroom. Give the photos an initial rating, spend some time editing, perhaps apply the help of a plug in or 2.
I thought that I would narrow the scope of my Grand Teton photos. Only review shots of buildings inside the park. That did speed up the process. Although I still found it hard to “give up” on some of my favorites, at least the “keepers” were similar enough to make me happy. You can see my mini gallery here:

Windows 7 and processing photos from my trip

October 11, 2009 by admin Leave a Comment

I was up until 2:30AM last night re-installing all my software after upgrading to Windows 7. I think I’m getting a performance improvement with Windows 7, but I’ve lost another day in processing the images from my trip to Yellowstone & Grand Teton. Thought that I’d upload a photo from a beautiful snowy day right before I left. I love weather drama.
