I have finally finished going over my over 3000 pictures from Death Valley at Thanksgiving. Our original plans for camping were reined in due to the snow and cold, so we ended up staying in Panamint Springs Resort, Beatty and the fascinating Amargosa Opera House, with its haunting and crumbly charm.

This is one of those cases where a hazy distraction can be used to create an advantageous photographic design element.
Because of the unusually lush vegetation due to the prior winter’s snow pack, the fires were allowed to burn; an incongruous blessing and one our burning eyes and smoke clogged lungs were having a hard time buying. The apocalyptic scene of flames burning in the darkness on both sides of the road was one I will not soon forget.

This hike was one of my all time favorites. We got to Mist Falls and though it was almost straight up, were egged on to go onwards and upwards to Paradise Valley.

Zumwalt Meadows is at roads-end in Kings Canyon, the front door to a vast wilderness area, offering challenging hikes off the tourist circuit and teeming with black bears. This picture was taken near the parking area, and not so secluded. The crystal clear water and the native California Sunflowers were calling us to explore further… and so we did.

We found this delightful waterfall while searching for the trailhead to Weaver Lake. Most of this hike had a moderate ascent through semi-barren landscape with not a lot of photographic opportunity. The elevation, (along with 60 pounds of gear), made it difficult, and my Minnesota companions were not digging my rush to get to the top. But the lake, at 9000 feet, was amazing and we took a refreshing dip. The hike down was a lot easier.

August / Weaver Lake
The Sequoia calendar has 15 months, and I want to post all of them before the end of the year. This one is Weaver Lake. Weaver Lake is actually in Sequoia National Forest. We accidentally went several miles too far on a dirt road, trying to find the trail head for this hike and turned around when the fire crews told us there was a fire ahead. Luckily we did find the trailhead. I was quite impressed with the lake.

After our 23 mile climb on the mostly one lane dirt road, we arrived in Mineral King. After checking out the cute little cabin at Silver City Resort, we rushed out to do a short hike. We decided on Timber Gap since it was only a few miles. Little did we realize that the few miles was straight up. And this seemed particularly brutal because we hadn’t adjusted to the elevation yet. I panted pretty much the whole way to the top. But the view from the top, really was nice.
