July – Tokopah Falls 2

December 4, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

For July’s calendar picture, we are still at Tokopah Falls (in Sequoia National Park).  It is a beautiful area, and a great hike.  The secret is to stay as close to the water as possible.

June – Tokopah Falls

November 27, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Tokopah Falls is one of the most popular and easily accessible hikes in Sequoia.  I’ve done it 3 times now.  This time we spent more time either in or near the water.  That is where we found this tree stump.  This is the June shot in our calendar.

May – White Chief

November 13, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

One of the most popular hikes in the Mineral King area is White Chief.  It is truly a beautiful hike.  The waterfall at the end isn’t massive, but the entire stream below it was coated in wild flowers.  This is a view back in the direction that we came from.

April – Trailhead Franklin Lake

November 11, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

This shot was taken at the end of the Hike to Franklin Lake.  It was on a bridge almost back to the parking lot.  We had just seen a bear on the trail, and I saw this view.  I’m glad I stopped.

March – Timber Gap

November 9, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

After our 23 mile climb on the mostly one lane dirt road, we arrived in Mineral King.  After checking out the cute little cabin at Silver City Resort, we rushed out to do a short hike.  We decided on Timber Gap since it was only a few miles.  Little did we realize that the few miles was straight up.  And this seemed particularly brutal because we hadn’t adjusted to the elevation yet.  I panted pretty much the whole way to the top.  But the view from the top, really was nice.

February – On the Way to Mineral King

November 8, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

This is the February 2011 photo from the calendar.  It was taken on the way to Mineral King, near the beginning of the climb up the hill.  There was a rocky spot, worn smooth by the water.  We had lunch there, little realizing the 23 mile mostly one lane, dirt road that lay ahead.

January – Paradise Valley

November 7, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

This is the shot we’re using for January 2010 (it’s a 15 month calendar so it will also have a January 2012).  It’s from Paradise Valley. You get to Paradise Valley, which is above Mist Falls, at Roads End in Kings Canyon.  The name really seemed appropriate, it was such a serene and beautiful place.  Near here is where I saw the bear that was in perfect position to be photographed.  (Bear photos to be posted later.)

Sequoia calendar ready!

October 30, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

After voting on the images, we’ve published our 2011 calendar.   And because of the great support being given to my Father in Law, we’re giving all proceeds from the sale to the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute.  You can click here to see all the great work they perform:

http://www.abbottnorthwestern.com/ahs/anw.nsf/page/vpci

If you’re interested the calendar can be ordered here:

http://www.lulu.com/product/calendar/sequoia-kings-canyon/13224348

I’ll be publishing samples from the calendar for the next few posts.  Below is the cover.  This is in Kings Canyon on the way back from a hike to Mist Falls and Paradise Valley.  There was a fire in the distance that had been burning for over a month.  Instead of trying to overcome the smoke and haze, I tried to make it work for me.

Sequoia On the way to Mineral King

September 12, 2010 by admin 1 Comment

I’ve been back for 6 days from an amazing trip to Sequoia.  The first part of the trip was spent in Mineral King, a part of the park that I’ve never been to before.  It requires taking an extremely curvy one lane road for 23 miles.  Near the beginning of the climb up the hill we stopped at a Waterfall.  Here are a few shots.
